Salem is more than the witch trials and hangings of 19 innocent people. Nonetheless, it’s impossible to overlook the impact that 1692 had on the city — then and now. Monuments, cemeteries and museums are forever reminders of what happened.
Our Story
Though the home was restored in the Colonial Revival style, it still retains a number of Jacobean details including an exterior overhang girt and specially preserved plaster treatments in the great hall. Emmerton used ticket and store sale proceeds from the museum to fund The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association. In the late 1800s/early 1900s, the settlement house movement was seen as the progressive method to help newly arriving immigrant families adapt to life in their new cities. Settlement houses offered a variety of services including classes, medical care, and recreational opportunities.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Hooper-Hathaway House is a building that was rescued through the combined efforts of Caroline Emmerton and Historic New England. Miss Emmerton purchased the house in 1911 when it demolition became a threat. She had it moved from Washington Street in Salem to its present location.

The industriousness of Turner and his descendants in the fishing, trading and mercantile businesses came to define the economy of Puritan New England and contributed to New England’s maritime tradition. The House of the Seven Gables is one of the largest timber-framed mansions in North America still on its original foundation. The House of the Seven Gables in Salem is hosting a chamber music concert next month to raise funds for its immigrant-focused settlement program.
His friends and neighbors included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and Bronson Alcott. Sophia and her sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, would prove to be influential for the rest of Hawthorne’s life and career. In 1839, he received his first political appointment as a “weigher and gauger” at the Boston Custom House. During this time he also published The Gentle Boy and Grandfather’s Chair. Emmerton herself was a board member at the Carpenter Street Home, a shelter for orphaned children, and at The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, now known as Historic New England.

The Witch House and The Salem Witch Museum
The Haunted Happening website listed here contains a calendar of events and many helpful tips. Each venue, including the House of the Seven Gables, will give you pointers, as well. A Grand Parade draws a big crowd early in October and signals the official beginning of Haunted Happenings. The first Haunted Happening, in 1982, drew 50,000 people — families, couples, history buffs and Halloween enthusiasts.

The Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace was moved to historic site in 1958. The entire area surrounding the house was designed by landscape gardener Dan Foley. The Counting House, circa 1830, is typical of the small buildings located on and around the then busy wharfs of Salem Harbor. In fact, there were many more wharfs present in the harbor in those days than there are now.

The patterned beds were laid out in 1909 by Joseph Everett Chandler, the architect who partnered with Caroline Emmerton on the restoration of The House of the Seven Gables. The garden was designed in a Jacobean style as an “oasis of beauty” to be enjoyed by her neighbors. Miss Emmerton was adamant about the maintenance of the grounds and set the standards practiced today. The Counting House is now known as Kids Cove, where young visitors and their families can learn about Salem’s maritime history through engaging hands-on activities.
In the future, a dendrochronology study will provide science-based evidence that will determine the age of the posts and beam. It was built c.1655 by John Beckett, the first in a long line of famed Salem shipbuilders. The most well-known of these shipbuilders was Retire Beckett, for whom the home is named. The home was originally located on Beckett Street (less than a half mile from the museum campus).
When she sees her cousin Judge Jaffrey Pyncheon, she retreats back into the house. Jaffrey is the current embodiment of Colonel Pyncheon's spirit among the Pyncheons. She blames Jaffrey for the imprisonment of Clifford, the Pyncheon mentioned earlier who was convicted of murder and whose return from prison after many years is imminent. That night, Phoebe Pyncheon, a seventeen year old relative, arrives from the country, wishing to stay at the House of the Seven Gables. Phoebe immediately brightens the dreary and decrepit house, and even helps Hepzibah establish her store. Holgrave tells Phoebe the history of the Pyncheon family, in particular the controversy surrounding the supposedly murderous Clifford.
Emmerton was a founder of the Salem Fraternity, the first Boys and Girls Club to be established in Massachusetts. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s birthplace, moved to the grounds of The House of the Seven Gables in 1958, from its original location a few blocks away on Union Street. If you do not provide proof of residency, you will need to pay full price. Valid proof of residency includes a state-issued photo ID with a current address, Salem Public Schools ID, or Salem State University ID.
Begun in 1637, Old Burying Point is one of the oldest cemeteries in the country and the oldest of eight in Salem. Two judges who oversaw the witch trials are buried here — John Hathorne (great-great-grandfather of Nathaniel Hawthorne) and Bartholomew Gidney, along with numerous notable Salem residents. Though relatively small at 1.47 acres, there are 700 headstones and 17 box tombs here. None of those accused of witchcraft and executed are buried here because they were not allowed Christian burials. Also located at this site is the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, dedicated in 1992 by Nobel Laureate Eli Wiesel.
A distant relative, the lively and pretty young Phoebe arrives and quickly becomes invaluable, charming customers and rousing Clifford from depression. A delicate romance grows between Phoebe and the mysterious attic lodger Holgrave, who is writing a history of the Pyncheon family. A battered house with seven gables stands in a small New England town. (Gables are the triangular structures formed by two intersecting points of a roof.) The house, which belongs to the Pyncheon family, has a long and controversial history. In the mid-1600s, a local farmer named Matthew Maule builds a house on fertile land near a pleasant spring.
A worried Hepzibah then searches Holgrave's room and discovers he is really Matthew Maule. She warns Clifford, who admits that he has known all along who Holgrave is and that Holgrave is part of his plan to clear his name. The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association remains one of about 50 settlement houses that still operate in the United States. Caroline Emmerton’s organization has survived for over a century and will continue to help generations of immigrant families. After restoring the Turner-Ingersoll mansion, Emmerton continued to focus on saving threatened Salem buildings.
The Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace was originally located on Union Street. It was purchased by The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association and moved to the museum campus in 1958 under the guidance of Abbott Lowell Cummings, a noted architectural historian and conservator. Unlike the high-style Georgian features in The House of the Seven Gables, the Hawthorne Birthplace is a modest example of this style.
Less terrible but equally strange is Holgrave, the house’s only lodger. He and Phoebe spend much time together, tending the garden and feeding the house chickens, a once-mighty breed whose former glory is compared to that of the Pyncheons. Holgrave explains his radical politics, which revolve around the principle that each generation should tear down the work of those before it, and asks Phoebe constantly about Clifford and his past. The Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace is now immediately adjacent to the House of the Seven Gables, and access to it is granted with either a regular admission fee or a grounds pass. Although it is indeed the house in which Hawthorne was born and lived to the age of four, the house was sited a few blocks away on Union Street when he inhabited it.
